Sources said this is the fourth incident since the violence began in May 2023, when soldiers on leave and on duty or their relatives have been targeted by “hostile elements”.

Serto Thangthang Kom, a former soldier of the Assam Regiment, was abducted and killed by an unidentified armed group in September 2023. He was posted in Defense Service Corps (DSC) in Limakhong, Manipur. The Indian Army's Spear Corps had said in an ex-post, “He was on leave at his home in Imphal West at the time of the incident.”

Two months after that incident, four people were abducted by an unidentified armed group while they were traveling in an SUV from the hill district of Churachandpur to Limakhong. He was murdered. All four were family members of an Indian Army soldier serving in Jammu and Kashmir. During this time the soldier's father was successful in escaping. He was injured and was later taken by the army to Dimapur for treatment. Ultimately he was shifted to the base hospital in Guwahati, Assam.

Sources said that the soldier's father is now being treated at Limakhong Military Hospital after the base hospital in Guwahati. Sources said that the body of the soldier's mother was found and taken to Limakhong, from where the body was sent to Churachandpur for cremation.

Kidnapping of Additional SP on 27th February

In another case of attack on law and order personnel, an Additional Superintendent of Police was kidnapped from Imphal city on February 27. The attackers in this case were identified by the police as Arambai Tenggol. After this incident, Manipur Police Commandos had organized a symbolic protest in Imphal and other areas.

The police had warned in signs that such incidents would lead to the re-implementation of AFSPA.

Sources in the security establishment said, “The security forces, who are working day and night for the speedy restoration of peace and normalcy, are being targeted in the line of duty. The hostile attacks on the security forces and their families are to be strongly condemned. “And the criminals should be caught and punished as per the law.”
