The family of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif has got a big relief. An anti-corruption court on Thursday canceled permanent arrest warrants against Nawaz Sharif's two sons, who recently returned to Pakistan from Britain after seven years of self-imposed exile. Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz left the country in 2018 after being named in the 2016 Panama Papers scandal.
He was facing three charges of corruption related to the Panama Papers but he never appeared before the court due to which he was declared a fugitive. The brothers returned to Pakistan on Tuesday after the Islamabad Anti-Corruption Court suspended the permanent arrest warrant against them till Thursday on March 7.
Bail granted on a bond of Rs 50,000
Hasan and Hussain appeared before the Accountability Court in Islamabad on Thursday. After hearing the arguments, the court canceled the permanent arrest warrants issued in the Flagship, Al-Azizia and Avenfield corruption cases. The court approved his bail on a bond of Rs 50,000. Both sons of Nawaz Sharif have also applied for exemption from appearing in the court on the next hearing. The court has adjourned the hearing till Friday.
Whole family implicated in corruption cases
The brothers, who are British citizens, were embroiled in corruption cases in 2018 along with their father Nawaz Sharif, sister Maryam Nawaz and her husband Muhammad Safdar. Nawaz Sharif, Maryam and Safdar were convicted in Avenfield. Whereas Nawaz Sharif was also convicted in the Al-Azizia case and was acquitted in the Flagship case.
Everyone had challenged these cases separately in the Islamabad High Court. Maryam and Safdar got relief in 2022 and the court acquitted them. While Nawaz Sharif was living in London. Last year he returned to Pakistan and was acquitted in all cases.
