Following the order of Punjab and Haryana High Court, elections for Chandigarh Mayor are going to be held today. There is a direct contest in this election between the Congress-Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alliance and the BJP. This is the first contest between BJP and India Bloc before the general elections. In such a situation, everyone's eyes will be on the results of this election. Voting for Chandigarh Mayor elections will start at 10 am. In this year's elections, the mayor's seat is reserved for the Scheduled Caste category. Manoj Sonkar from BJP and Kumar from AAP have been fielded.

Elections will be held amidst strict police system

Strict police arrangements have been made in view of the elections, about 800 police personnel and paramilitary personnel have been deployed. Besides, three-tier barricades have also been installed for the security of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had canceled the Chandigarh administration's order to postpone the mayoral elections and had suggested holding the elections on January 30. This decision of the High Court came on a petition challenging the Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner's order to postpone the date of mayor election from January 18 to February 6. The Deputy Commissioner is the authority responsible for conducting mayor's elections.

In the 35-member Municipal Corporation House, the AAP and Congress alliance together have 20 votes, while the BJP has 15 votes, which includes the votes of 14 councilors and MP Kirron Kher. The magic number of victory is 19.

Congress had created the second one by voting in 2022 and 2023. As a result of which BJP won those elections. The election process for the post of Mayor is done through secret ballot.

There will be competition between these candidates

In this year's elections, the mayor's seat is reserved for the Scheduled Caste category, in which Manoj Sonkar from BJP and Kumar from AAP are contenders. For the post of Senior Deputy Mayor, BJP's Kuljeet Sandhu will face Congress's Gurpreet Singh Gabi, while for the post of Deputy Mayor, there will be a contest between BJP's Rajinder Sharma and Congress's Nirmala Dev.
