On the day of Mahashivratri, bathe the idol of Lord Shankar with Panchamrit. After that offer 8 pots of saffron water. Light a lamp for the whole night on that day. Apply sandalwood tilak. Offer Belpatra, Bhang, Dhatura, Sugarcane juice, Tulsi, Nutmeg, Lotus Gatte, Fruits, Sweets, Sweet Paan, Perfume and Dakshina. Lastly, distribute the prasad by offering kheer containing saffron. Chant the mantras Om Namo Bhagwate Rudraya, Om Namah Shivay Rudraya Shambhavay Bhavanipataye Namo Namah. Do recite Shiv Purana on this day. Night vigil is also done on the day of Mahashivratri.
