In May 2022, the state government had constituted a five-member committee of the Supreme Court to prepare the draft of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand. Apart from Justice Desai, the committee includes retired Delhi High Court judge Pramod Kohli, social activist Manu Gaur, former Chief Secretary Shatrughan Singh and Doon University Vice-Chancellor Surekha Dangwal.

The CM further wrote, “The committee formed to prepare the draft of the Uniform Civil Code will submit its report to the state government on February 2. We will implement the Uniform Civil Code in the state by bringing a bill in the upcoming assembly session.”

The Expert Committee talked to various social organizations, intellectuals and people of all religions in 13 districts of the state regarding the Uniform Civil Code Act. The committee has received more than 2.50 lakh suggestions online and offline from across the state, on the basis of which the draft of UCC has been prepared.

On the other hand, the Uttarakhand government has called the assembly session from February 5 to February 8. Specifically, this session has been called to present the draft of the Uniform Civil Code Act in the House. In this assembly session, the Uniform Civil Code law will be discussed between the ruling party and the opposition, after which it will be given the form of a law and implemented in the state.
