Kolkata:

Following the instructions of the Election Commission, the West Bengal government on Monday appointed Vivek Sahay as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. Sources gave this information. This appointment was made within hours of the commission removing Rajiv Kumar from the post of DGP. Sahay, a 1988 batch IPS officer, was posted as Assistant Director General and Commandant General (Home Guard). Kumar was appointed Director General of Police of the state in December last year.

Sources said Kumar has been transferred to the Information and Technology Department as an interim arrangement. Sources said that the decision to transfer the West Bengal DGP was taken because the officer had earlier been removed from election management duties during the 2016 assembly elections and 2019 Lok Sabha elections in the state.

Following the instructions of the Commission, the state government presented the names of three officers for consideration, which included the names of Vivek Sahay, Sanjay Mukherjee and Rajesh Kumar.

Incidentally, Vivek Sahay had earlier faced suspension by the commission in March 2021 during his tenure as director of security. This action was taken after the incident in which Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was injured in Nandigram during the 2021 state assembly elections.
