The Sri Lankan team had lost 5 wickets for only 57 runs in the first innings, when Kamindu Mendis came to the crease to bat at number seven. Batting at number seven, he scored 102 runs in the first innings and made a partnership of 202 runs with Dhananjay de Silva. In the second innings, Mendis was sent to bat at number eight and this time he played an inning of 164 runs. With this, Kamindu Mendis has become the first player in the 147-year history of Test cricket to score a century in both the innings while batting at No. 7 or lower. Apart from this, Mendis has also become the first Sri Lankan player to score half-centuries in the first three innings of his Test career. He also scored 61 runs in his debut innings.

Apart from him, Dhananjay de Silva has also played centuries in both the innings. Mendis and de Silva have become only the third pair in the history of Test cricket to score centuries in both innings of a Test match. Before him, Greg and Ian Chappell had scored centuries in both the innings of the Test match against New Zealand in 1974. In 2014, Misbah Ul-Haq and Azhar Ali had achieved the feat of scoring centuries in both the innings against Australia. There was a partnership of 202 runs in the first innings and 173 runs in the second innings between Mendis and De Silva.

Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh test match status

Sri Lanka had scored 280 runs while playing in the first innings, whereas Bangladesh was limited to only 188 runs in the first innings. Sri Lanka scored 418 runs in the third innings thanks to centuries by Kamindu Mendis and Dhananjay de Silva and a half-century by Karunaratne. Now Bangladesh has lost 5 wickets for 47 runs in their second innings and they need 464 runs to win.
